1. Data Structure & Messaging Standards
Modern CP72 forms are more than paper; they are the physical manifestation of Electronic Advance Data (EAD).
- UPU EDI Messaging Standard M33 (ITMATT V1): This is the protocol used to transmit the form's data electronically to destination customs before the parcel arrives.
- Mandatory Data Elements:
- HS Tariff Number: A 6-digit code (based on the WCO Harmonized System) is required for all commercial goods to determine duty rates.
- Country of Origin: The specific country where the goods were manufactured or assembled.
- EORI/VAT Numbers: Business senders to the EU must include their Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number to prevent rejection.
2. Barcode & Identification (UPU S10 Standard)
Every CP72 form must feature a unique 13-character identifier that follows the UPU S10 technical standard.
- Structure:
- Service Indicator (2 chars): Typically starts with 'C' for parcel post or 'E' for Express.
- Serial Number (8 digits): A unique sequence for the specific item.
- Check Digit (1 digit): Calculated using a specific weighted modulus-11 algorithm to verify the serial number.
- Country Code (2 chars): The ISO country code of the origin (e.g., 'US' for USA).
- Symbology: Code 128 is strongly recommended due to its high data density and error detection, though Code 39 is also permitted.
- X-Dimension: A minimum bar width of 0.33 mm is recommended to ensure high-speed scanners at international hubs can read the label
